Difference between manager and leader:

Manager refers to an individual who possesses authority and position to get work done, while a leader refers to an individual who may or may not possess any authority or position, still has the ability to get work done.

Key to transitioning from management to leadership paradigm:

The key to transit from management to leadership paradigm is the ability to influence. A manager has authority and position but may not have the ability to influence others. Influence refers to the process of motivating others to believe in someone’s idea and working to achieve the goals. A leader possesses the ability to influence others with their persuasion skills. Therefore, to motivate the followers, the leader does not need any position or authority in the organization.

Importance of transition:

A manager has to perform different roles in an organization. According to Henry Mintzberg, a manager performs interpersonal, informational, and decisional roles. As a manager, an individual has to perform the role of a leader also. The manager has to accomplish the organizational objectives through planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. If the manager performs the leader role effectively, he/she will perform other roles effectively.
