Psychrophilic and thermophilic homologues of adenylate kinase from Bacillus globisporus and Bacillus stearothermophilus, respectively, have been structurally characterized using X-ray crystallography methods. Comparison of the available structures reveals a total of 13 and 15 ion pairs present in Bacillus globisporus and Bacillus stearothermophilus, respectively. The number of hydrogen bonds for Bacillus globisporus versus Bacillus stearothermophilus are 229 and 233, respectively. Furthermore, the exposed apolar surface area in Bacillus globisporus verus Bacillus stearothermophilus is 5638 and 5408 Å, respectively. Please briefly discuss how each of these structural observations is consistent with the status of “psychrophile” or “thermophile.” Please use this data to determine which enzyme would require a higher activation energy for proper function (provide specific examples derived from the text above). Please speculate regarding how the observed trends in exposed apolar surface area relate to cold or hot adaptation. For reference, please feel welcome to utilize PDB files 1S3G and 1ZIP.

Answer #1

Psychrophile are such type of organisms, who are capable of growth and reproduction in low temperature that's why they are considered as exthermophilic organisms. They are found in polar region and deep sea, those are very cold places.

There are many organisms in psychrophile family, some of them are bacteria, Licheans, snow algea, fungi and with bless midges

These organisms are protected from freezing and expansion of cold , as long as they cool slowly, the cells may continue to have some metabolic activity in extracular fluid down to these temperatures and they remain viable once restored to nirmalbtemperatured.

The enzymes of these organisms have been hypotherised to engaged in a activity - stability- flexibility relation as a result for adopting to the cold - the flexibility of their enzyme structure will increase as a way to adjust the freezing temperature.

Thermophile's are such type of organisms that grow best at higher temperature.so, they are called heat loving organisms.

The enzymes in thermophile's functioning high temperature according their necessity. Thus they can survive in height temperature. They are inhabitate in heated regions as hot spring , deep sea, decaying plant matter.
