Failure of glucose to be completed metabolised results in:

1.) Hyperglycaemia, due to accumulation of unmetabolised glucose

2.) Low levels of ATP, due to metabolism impairment

3.) Increase in oxidative stress, due to increased concentration of ROS (reactive oxygen species)

Example: diabetes mellitus are characterised by mitochondrial dysfunction. In case of diabetes, mitochondrial dysfunction is caused by insulin resistance. Insulin resistance causes hyperglycaemia, which in turn affects mitochondrial function adversely.

Prevention:

1.) Maintaining a healthy bodyweight

2.) Regular physical exercise

3.) Low dietary intake of sugar and refined carbohydrates

4.) Avoidance of pro-inflammatory activities like smoking
