A 25mm diameter steel rod 1.5m long is being used in a rigid structure.

For this steel the Ultimate Tensile Stress is 410 MPa

Young’s Modulus is 200 GPa

The rod is to be subjected to a tension load of 40 kN.

Design requirements are that the rod cannot extend by more than 0.5 mm and that there is a Factor of Safety of 5 for the tensile stress.

Determine whether or not the rod is adequate for the task:

  1. With regards to the condition that a FoS of 5 be maintained
  2. With regards to the condition that extension not exceed 0.5 mm.
  3. What is the maximum load this rod can be subject to while meeting the design requirements?
