The free-enterprise system promotes self-interest behaviors and individualism that can lead to conflict when the self-interests of employers and of employees are not aligned. Agreement or disagreement with the assumptions is dependent on an individual’s belief in the extent of individual rights in the workplace and whether or not individuals are better served by being able to act collectively to secure rights in the work place. Employers believe that it is better to deal with employee directly; employees believe that representation provides a powerful counterbalance to the power that employers can wield. Agreement or disagreement on these principles would rely on a person's belief in the scope of individual rights at the workplace and the ability of people to move together to ensure employee freedom is of the greatest benefit. Employers find it easier to deal directly with workers; employees feel legislators provide a strong contrast between the control employers should wield.
