As a coffee enthusiast you wish to keep your coffee as hot as possible for as long as possible. You wish to find the rate of heat loss of a typical coffee mug. Assume the mug to be a cylinder which has a lid made out of the same material as the rest of the cylinder, and the thickness of the walls is 1.34 cm. If the coffee in the mug is 79.2 °C and the room temperature is 24.0 °C how much more heat does the mug lose through conduction than from radiated energy. See the hint below for important constants.

Brewed coffee is often too hot to drink right away. You can cool it with an ice cube, but this dilutes it. Or you can buy a device that will cool your coffee without dilution - a 220 g aluminum cylinder that you take from your freezer and place in a mug of hot coffee. If the cylinder is cooled to -20∘C, a typical freezer temperature, and then dropped into a large cup of coffee (essentially water, with a mass...

    1) You notice that the ceramic coffee mugs in the office get too hot to hold about 15 seconds after pouring in the hot coffee. The wall thickness of the cup is 2.5mm. (a) What, approximately, is the thermal diffusivity of the ceramic of the mug? (b) Given that the volume specific heat of solids, pCp, is more or less constant at 2* 106J/m3 K, what approximately is the thermal conductivity of the cup material? (c) If the cup were...
