Sodium lactate is used as carbon source to determine the amount of the lactic acid consumption, lactate is used as an energy source for ATP production and an electron source for the hydrogensulphde production from sulphate. Lactate is converted into pyruvate and then into acetyl-CoA, the acetyl-CoA is reduced into acetate producing ATP in the process. The electron released from the acetyl-CoA to acetate conversion are taken up by the hydrogen atom and the sulphate is reduced to hydrogen sulphide.
