The apparent brightness (flux) determine by the star's two quantities. They are

Intrinsic Brightness( Luminosity) and Distance.

Because the apparent brightness is the amount of star energy radiation reaches to the obser on the earth. Where luminosity is the amount of star radiation into space. So apparent brightness depends on Intrinsic Brightness( Luminosity) and Distance.
