Alpha Centauri is the closest star system and planetary system to our Solar System at 4.24 light-years from the Sun. A NASA

spacecraft, Deep Space 1 (DS1), can travel in deep space at a top speed of 35,000 mph, how many years would it take DS1 to reach

Alpha Centauri? Assuming light travels at a speed of 299,792,458 meter per second and 1 mile = 1609 meters.

Answer #1

Converting 4.24 light years to km:

1 light year = 9.461e12 km

Therefore, 4.24 light years = 4.24*9.461e12 km =4.011e13 km

Converting 35000 mph to kph:

1 mph = 1.609kph

Rherefore, 35000 mph = 35000 * 1.609 kph = 56315 kph

Hence, time taken = distance / speed = 4.011e13 km / 56315 kph= 7.122e8 hours

1 year = 8760 hours

Therefore, 7.122e8 hours = 7.122e8/8760 = 81301.370 years

ANSWER 3A, B, AND C! 3. The star system that is closest to the earth is Alpha Centauri. It is 4.37 light years away in Earth's reference frame. The fastest spacecraft humans have ever launched is New Horizons, which sent us sweet pictures of Pluto in 2015. It attained a speed of 45 km/s relative to the sun. That's fast, but even at this rate, interstellar travel is not practical. a) Traveling at 45 km/s, how long, in years, would...
