The direct runoff depth for a given rainfall can not be a negative value. The minimum value may be zero, when all precipitation percolates deep within ground and recharges ground water table. when railfall happens there are many losses occur like interception, depression storage ,evaporation , infiltertaion ... after these losses remaining water flow as overland flow or channel flow and joins main stream. this water flow is called direct runoff and its depth is knowd as direct runoff depth. it can not be negative.
