A student attempted to prepare 1-chlorobutane by treating 1-butanol with a solution of NaCl. Did the student get the desired product? Explain.

No, Student will not get desired product because NaCl is a salt of strong acid and a strong base. Here, to ptepare 1-chlorobutane from alcohol we have to proceed via neucleophilic substitution reaction so to occur we need a very strong electon deficient species to attack on Oxygen of atom and can create carbocation. Hee NaCl has electron deficient specy Na+ ion but it is stable salt which can not cause substitution.
