This was a experiment using the Atwood Machine, and graphs were plotted (net force vs. aexp) Describe how the following factors would increase or decrease the values you found for aexp (a) Air Resistance (b) Pulley Friction: (c) String Mass (d) Rotational Inertia of the Pulley
If I understand correctly then is the
acceleration. Please correct me through the comments if that is not
the case.
(a) Air resistance is the force which always acts in a direction
opposite to the motion, therefore it will decrease .
(b) Pulley friction also provides a force which acts in a
direction opposite to the motion, hence again will
decrease.
(c) String mass will also decrease the acceleration ,
because some of the energy of the potential energy of the masses
will be used to provide kinetic energy to the string as it has mass
now.
(d)Finally, if the pulley has mass then then it will have
rotational inertial. Then a certain amount of the potential energy
of the masses will go to increase the rotational kinetic energy of
the pulley, therefore acceleration will again
decrease.

An Atwood Machine is composed of a frictionless pulley with two cubes connected by a string' Cube A, on the left, has a mass of 4.0kg and cube B, on the right has a mass of 6.0kg. The pulley has a rotational inertia of 1/2 MR2. How does that affect the acceleration of the masses. Would tension A be the same as tension B? Why or why not?
Page 5 Atwood's Machine Problem 2: Setup an Atwood machine using a pulley, string and two masses. Measure the acceleration of the masses when released from rest and compare to the theoretical value as calculated in Lesson notes. By measuring the elapsed time, and the vertical displacement Ay, the acceleration y, t ep is determined usingAact Compare the measured and theoretical values of a using the percent error formula (see Lesson 6 for aeory). y2 t Table 1: Experimental Data...
There are two graphs that needs to be made in this lab:
1. Total Energy Vs time with m = 20g
2. Total Energy Vs time with m = 40g
A) Explain the nature of the plots .(Linear or non
linear?) The expected slope is zero in both cases. Why? Explain
with the use of law of conservation of energy. What is the
significance of the intercept?
B) Suppose you drew the Kinetic Energy Vs potential

PROBLEM 2.In the sketch a three part physical pendulum is shown, consisting of two massless rods (L=1 m) which make a 90 angle with respect to each other and are constrained to pivot at about an axis that is perpendicular to the paper and at the corner of where they meet. Two unequal point masses aresolidly attached, one at each end. The rod oscillates (when disturbed from equilibrium) due to the downward force of gravity. (ignore friction and air resistance)....

INVESTIGATION 10 ROTATIONAL MOTION OBJECTIVE To determine the moment of inertia I of a heavy composite disk by plotting measured values of torque versus angular acceleration. THEORY Newton's second law states that for translational motion (motion in a straight line) an unbalanced force on an object results in an acceleration which is proportional to the mass of the object. This means that the heavier...

be answered (I believe).
Answer Question 6 to 11. Please. Thank you
Practical 3: Rotation due to an External Moment - Pre-Lab Preparation Rotation due to an External Moment: Pre-lab Preparation In this practical exercise you will investigate the angular acceleration of a disc about its centre of mass due to an applied moment, and determine the moment of inertia of the disc. Write down the equation...
3. For experiment A, use equations 1&3 to develop a general equation for the value of tension (T) based on the values of the two masses. You will need this later to answer lab question (4), so write it in now. 4. Based on the "net force" and "total mass" approach that was used to derive equations 3,4, and 5; develop the equation for acceleration of two masses (m, and m2) hanging vertically from either side of a frictionless pulley....
