Here's what I think -

Techniques I would prefer:

  1. Brainstorming - My favourite. All people can help to list requirements.
  2. Stakeholder analysis - Also important. You've got to address all stakeholders.
  3. Interviews - Group interviews should be preferred in this case over one on one interviews. You don't want to spend too much time of/with the passengers.
  4. Focus group - This would be very similar to group interviews, so you may skip this one.
  5. Quality Function Deployment - Addressing the three types of requirements (normal, expected, exciting)
  6. Use cases and Scenarios - They always help in giving a description of complete system.
  7. Laddering - asking passengers short prompting questions to elicit requirements.
  8. Viewpoints - one where you organize information according to different entities(eg - baggage handling personnel, travelers, airport managers, etc.)

Techniques I would not prefer:

  1. Prototyping - In this case, creating a prototype does not makes sense. You can't create a trial version obviously.
  2. One on one interviews - You would end up spending a lot of time in this case, and so will the customers.
  3. Protocol analysis - Again, we don't want to bother the customers.
  4. Joint application design(JAD) - Unless one has too much time, JAD is not a good choice.
  5. Workshops - One where stakeholders meet to resolve elicitation issues.

Well, this is my point of view. Hope this helps a little. Best of Luck!
