Obesity and Smoking Being overweight and smoking places stress on the body, and poor nutrition contributes to obesity. Obesity is on the increase, and it is a major contributor to the rising cost of health care, as is smoking. Health officials are trying to persuade Americans to quit smoking and lose weight. The government has released public service ads to convince people to stop smoking and get in shape and eat right.

Is there prejudice and discrimination against obese people and/or smokers at work?

Is it ethical and socially responsible for the government to try to get people to stop smoking and lose weight through ads and other methods?

Should tax money be spent on ads to promote not smoking, exercise, and healthy eating?

What is the reason for the increase in obesity in the United States? Some people blame restaurant owners (like McDonald’s and its prior super-size it) and other food marketers (Coke and Pepsi, Frito-Lay) for the obesity problem. Some say consumers love junk food, just want to overeat, they don’t care about being obese, and are too lazy to exercise. What do you think?

Should the government pass laws to require junk food to be healthier? If so, what should the laws require?

Should the government pass laws to restrict where people can smoke and/or prevent people from smoking? If so, what should the laws require?
