Cell Phones And Portable Deices

A cell phone is a mobile or portable phone alternatively referred to as a cell, cellular, and cellular phone. It enables a user to communicate almost anywhere in the world. The cell phone was invented by Dr. Martin Cooper, along with his team of developers at Motorola. The first cell phone weighed 2.4-pounds and was 9-inches long. Dr. Cooper also made the first cell phone call from Motorola to Dr. Joel Engel of Bell Labs.on April 3, 1973.

A portable device is any device that can easily be carried. It is a small form factor of a computing device that is designed to be held and used in the hands. Portable devices are becoming an increasingly important part of personal computing as the capabilities of devices like laptops, tablets and smartphones continue to improve. Portable devices are primarily battery powered devices with base computing resources in the form of a processor, memory, and storage and network access. The latest portable devices are thin and lightweight, making them easy to carry and hold. This was not the case for earlier attempts at portable computers. Small plug-and-play devices such as USB drives, external hard disks and webcams can also be called portable devices.

The mobile phone can be used to communicate over long distances without wires. It works by communicating with a nearby base station (also called a "cell site") which connects it to the main phone network. When moving, if the mobile phone gets too far away from the cell it is connected to, that cell sends a message to another cell to tell the new cell to take over the call. This is called a "hand off," and the call continues with the new cell the phone is connected to. The hand-off is done so well and carefully that the user will usually never even know that the call was transferred to another cell. As mobile phones became more popular, they began to cost less money, and more people could afford them. Monthly plans became available for rates as low as US$30 or US$40 a month. Cell phones have become so cheap to own that they have mostly replaced pay phones and phone booths except for urban areas with many people. In the 21st century, a new type of mobile phone, called smartphones, have become popular. Now, more people are using smartphones than the old kind of mobile phone, which are called feature phones.

A cell phone combines technologies, mainly telephone, radio, and computer. Most also have a digital camera inside. Cell phones work as two-way radios. They send electromagnetic microwaves from base station to base station. The waves are sent through antennas. This is called wireless communication. Early cell telephones used analog networks. They became rare late in the 20th century. Modern phones use digital networks. The first digital networks are also known as second generation, or 2G, technologies. The most used digital network is GSM (Global System for Mobile communication). It is used mainly in Europe and Asia, while CDMA (Code-Division Multiple Access) networks are mainly used in North America. The difference is in communication protocol. Other countries like Japan have different 2G protocols. A few 2G networks are still used. 3G are more common, and many places have 4G. The radio waves that the mobile phone networks use are split into different frequencies. The frequency is measured in Hz. Low frequencies can send the signal farther. Higher frequencies provide better connections and the voice communications are generally clearer. Four main frequencies are used around the world: 850, 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz. Europe uses 900 and 1800 MHz and North America uses 850 and 1900 MHz. Today there are mobile phones that work on two, three or four frequencies. The most advanced phones work on all frequencies. They are called 'world' phones and can be used everywhere.

When a mobile phone is switched on, its radio receiver finds a nearby mobile phone network base station, and its transmitter sends a request for service. Computers in the base station check if the phone is allowed to use the network. The base station covers an area called a cell. A phone can move between different cells, but will only communicate with one cell at a time. This is why mobile communications are sometimes called cellular communications. Once connected to a station, the mobile phone can make calls. Because the network knows that the phone is connected to that particular cell, it can also route calls to the mobile phone. Sometimes the radio connection to the cell is lost, for example when you go underground. This means the phone cannot make or receive calls until the connection is made again.

A majority of new mobile phones from the 21st century are smartphones. These phones are basically small computers. Besides calling, they can be used for email, browsing the internet, playing music and games, and many other functions that computers can perform. Most smartphones run a common mobile operating system. This allows developers to make mobile apps that work on many different phones without needing to change the code. Examples of smartphones include Apple's iPhone (which uses iOS software) and Samsung's Galaxy series, one of many phones that use the Android platform made by Google.

Typically, any handheld computer device will have an LCD or OLED flatscreen interface, providing a touchscreen interface with digital buttons and keyboard or physical buttons along with a physical keyboard. Many such devices can connect to the Internet and interconnect with other devices such as car entertainment systems or headsets via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular networks or near field communication (NFC). Integrated cameras, the ability to place and receive voice and video telephone calls, video games, and Global Positioning System (GPS) capabilities are common. Power is typically provided by a lithium battery. Mobile devices may run mobile operating systems that allow third-party apps specialized for said capabilities to be installed and run.

A portable communications device is a hand-held or wearable device. For example, the walkie-talkie is a device that is hand-held when in use, and wearable when not in use. Portable telephones (mobile phones) are also carried, or worn, on a belt, or in a pocket. Portable devices have also become usable when worn. For example, most walkie talkies come with a voice operated transmit capability so that they will work hands-free, when used with a wearable microphone. Many telephones such as the Motorola Star Tac also feature an earpiece that allows the phone to be worn and used hands-free. The Star Tac was the first wearable cellular telephone, in the sense that it was the first that could be used while being worn. Portable computers are computers that can be hand-held, used on a lap, or worn in a pocket, belt, or the like, such as personal digital assistants (PDAs). PDAs are almost always worn (pocket or belt) when not in use, but some are also usable when worn (e.g. with eyeglass-based displays as well as electric seeing aids such as eyetap devices).

In the computer world, portable storage devices include flash drives, USB drives (thumb drives), external hard drives (sometimes called mini hard drives). There are also products that can be purchased to turn an internal hard drive into a portable hard drive: These are called enclosures and usually come with a hard case, a plug for the drive, and an external USB cable. Some are externally-powered, but many draw power from USB.

Flash or thumb drives (memory sticks, SD cards, etc.) are small cards about the size of a stick of gum. They are popular in computers, digital cameras, and MP3 players. The devices are incredibly small, have relatively high storage capacity, and don't draw much power. Memory chips are built into the small cards; the flash storage cards are then inserted into a computer (via an SD slot, which is standard on newer computers and laptops.)

There are also USB sticks or thumb drives. USB sticks use the same flash memory technology as the flash memory cards, but they have a USB connector built into them. They plug into a computer's USB port; once inserted, the system recognizes it as a valid drive and files can be accessed. Some thumb drives also come with security software installed, so that an end user must enter a password before accessing any data on the device. One thing to keep in mind: Flash/Thumb drives are sticks of storage space while external/portable hard drives are real hard disks. As such, they have internal moving parts and don't serve well as MP3 players on a long-distance run!

An external hard drive is the hard disk of a computer that is mobile. If you unplugged the internal drive of your laptop, slapped it into a case, and attached a USB cable to it, you would have an external hard drive. Most external hard drives have USB ports while some also have Firewire or Thunderbolt (but may only work on Apple products.) Many hard drives come with an external power source while some draw power from USB connection; sometimes there are two USB wires, one for power and one for data transfer. Because they are true computer disks, external hard drives can store both files and programs. It is possible to run software, games, and other applications directly from the external drive. This is not possible with a flash/thumb drive. There are multiple formatting options for external hard drives. Some are PC or Mac/Apple specific, so care is warranted in choosing the correct option.

Cell phones have created a multitasking ability that was never possibly before. People are able to text message, web search, and listen to music all at the same time. There are endless possibilities when it comes to cell phones and I think that the future of cell phones is going to be incredible. Even looking at the development of the cell phone is amazing because every so often there are so many new features added. I believe that cell phones are going to keep advancing to keep up with this ever-changing society we live in. And also portable devices hold a major role in our daily life inorder to transmit data from devices, without which we cannot work in this modern revolutionized world.
