Is certification under the ISO standards necessary for competing in the modern market?
ISO is an international organization that set standards for companies in quality aspects. The standards are defined based on the industries, such as food safety, health, services, and many more. It is completely an organization’s discretion to proceed for ISO certification or not except for the companies in some industries where the certification is required by laws. In other words, ISO standard certification is not necessary for competing in the modern market, but the certification may provide some edge to the company over competitors.
What should companies consider when deciding whether to become certified?
The companies should consider the following aspects when deciding whether to become certified:
1. The strategy of the organization: If the organization is following the cost leadership strategy, ISO certification will impact the cost of production. The increased cost can increase the prices of the product. In such cases, ISO certification may not add to the competitiveness of the organization.
2. Brand name: If the organization has an existing brand image, ISO certification does not impact much. The customers, suppliers, and other stakeholders believe in the brand name and trust is inherited in such cases.
3. Size and life cycle stage of the company: When the company is smaller in size and at initial stages of life cycle such as introduction or growth, the companies should proceed for the ISO standards as ISO standards help the companies to implement disciplined procedures and improve quality. This will result in an enhanced brand image also.
