The Survey of Study Habits and Attitudes (SSHA) is a test that measures the motivation, attitude toward school, and study habits of students. Scores range from 0-200. With regard to attitudes towards school, the mean score for U.S. college students is 115, with a standard deviation of 30. A teacher suspects that older students have better attitudes towards school and gives the SSHA to 35 students who are at least 30 years old. Their mean score was 123.2. Assume that σ=30 for the population of older students. Is this sufficient evidence that the mean score on attitudes towards school for older students is greater than 115?

Answer #1

Below are the null and alternative Hypothesis,
Null Hypothesis, H0: μ = 115
Alternative Hypothesis, Ha: μ > 115

Test statistic,
z = (xbar - mu)/(sigma/sqrt(n))
z = (123.2 - 115)/(30/sqrt(35))
z = 1.62

P-value Approach
P-value = 0.0526

As P-value >= 0.05, fail to reject null hypothesis.

There is not sufficient evidence to conclude that the mean score on attitudes towards school for older students is greater than 115
