Arrival rate, λ = 600 per hour
Service rate, μ = 1 in 5 seconds = (3600/5) per hour = 720 per hour

The service rate is constant. Hence the formulae for M/D/1 queue will be used.

(a)

Average waiting time, Wq = λ/{2μ. (μ - λ)} = 600/(2*720*(720-600)) = 0.003472 hours = 12.5 seconds

Average time in the system, Ws = Wq + Service time = 12.5 + 5 = 17.5 seconds.

(b)

Average number of cars in the system, Ls = Ws * λ = (17.5/3600)*600 = 2.92 cars
