A diver is located 63 m below the surface of the ocean (the density of seawater is 1025 kg/m3). To raise a treasure chest that she discovered, the diver inflates a plastic, spherical buoy with her compressed air tanks. The radius of the buoy is inflated to 0.41 m. If the treasure has a mass of 215 kg, what is the acceleration of the buoy and the treasure chest when they are tethered together and released? The chest is 22 cm × 53 cm × 11 cm in size. Neglect the tether’s mass and the mass of the buoy (and air in it) because these are much smaller than the mass of the treasure chest. Neglect the tether’s volume as well. The effect of “water resistance” can also be neglected when the buoy is just released (it will become non-negligible as the speed increases, but you only have to calculate the initial acceleration). When the buoy and the treasure reach the surface and come to rest, what fraction of the volume of the buoy is submerged? The buoy expands to 0.82 m in radius when it reaches the surface due to the reduction in the external pressure acting on the buoy.

A lost shipping container is found resting on the ocean floor and completely submerged. The container is 6.4 m long, 2.4 m wide, and 2.5 m high. Salvage experts attach a spherical balloon to the top of the container and inflate it with air pumped down from the surface. When the balloon's radius is 1.7 m, the shipping container just begins to rise towards the surface. What is the mass of the container? Ignore the mass of the balloon and...

An air bubble released by a deep-water diver, 120 m below the surface of a lake, has a volume of 1.65 cm3. The surface of the lake is at sea level, and the density of the lake water can be approximated as that of pure water. As the bubble rises to the surface, the temperature of the water and the number of air molecules in the bubble can each be approximated as constant. Find the volume (in cm) of the...

A scuba diver at a depth of 34.0 m below the surface of the sea off the shores of Panama City, where the temperature is 5.0°C, releases an air bubble with volume 15.0 cm3. The bubble rises to the surface where the temperature is 19.0°C. What is the volume of the bubble immediately before it breaks the surface? The specific gravity for seawater is 1.025. When the U.S. submarine Squalus became disabled at a depth of 56.5 m, a cylindrical chamber was lowered from a ship to rescue the crew. The chamber had a radius of 2.18 m and a height of 3.88 m, was open at the bottom, and held two rescuers. It slid along a guide cable that a diver had attached to a hatch on the submarine. Once it reached the hatch and clamped to the hull, the crew could escape into...
