Some researchers argue that chronic heroin use can make an individual irritable, irrational, and excitable, thereby increasing the likelihood he or she will engage in violence. Others argue that heroin use actually decreases violence because of its soothing and calming effects. You take a sample of n = 16 heroin-using women and ask each respondent to report the number of violent incidents that have occurred over the past three years in which she has attacked her intimate partner. You find the average number of violent incidents per heroin user to be M = 3.1 with SS = 26. You ask the same question to a sample of n =14 non-heroin users and find that their average number of violent partner incidents is M = 4.1 with SS = 35. Test the null hypothesis that heroin and non-heroin users have engaged in the same number of violent partner incidents against the alternate hypothesis that non-heroin and heroin users have engaged in a different number of violent partner incidents. Use an alpha of .05. Make sure to show all four (or five) steps in order.
