Stating the Research and Null Hypotheses.
What you are trying to prove is called the research hypothesis,
or alternative hypothesis, and is symbolized by H1 (some
books write it as Ha ). Research hypotheses
are always expressed in terms of population parameters because we
are interested in making statements about a population, based on
sample statistics. The null hypothesis, or H0,
contradicts the research hypothesis, and is usually a statement of
no difference.
In each of the following situations, state an appropriate null
hypothesis Hoand alternative hypothesis
H1. Be sure to state it in terms of population
parameters.
a) An education researcher believes that among college students
there is a correlation between grade point average (GPA) and
self-esteem data.
b) The Governer believes that tax refunds will create jobs.
Ans:
a)
H0: There is no correlation between grade point average (GPA) and self-esteem data.
Ha:There is a correlation between grade point average (GPA) and self-esteem data.
b)
H0: Number of jobs created is not related to tax refunds.
Ha: Number of jobs created is related to tax refunds.

STEP 2 State the Null and Alternative (Research) hypotheses NULL Hypothesis ALTERNATIVE Hypothesis Is this a one or two tailed test (if a one tailed test, what direction)? STEP 3 Define the elements of the problem What is the population or populations of interest? What is the sample? 3. The President claims that 100,000 jobs were created last month. You don't believe this claim is true, so you examine a sample of 1,000 records from the Bureau of Labor Statistics...
6.73 Hypotheses. In each of the following situations, state an appropriate null hypothesis H0 and alternative hypothesis Ha. Be sure to identify the parameters that you use to state the hypotheses. (We have not yet learned how to test these hypotheses.) (a) A sociologist asks a large sample of high school students which academic subject they like best. She suspects that a higher percent of males than of females will name economics as their favorite subject. (b) An education researcher...
STEP 1 State the null and alternative hypotheses. STEP 2 Find the value of the test statistic. STEP 3 Specify if the test is one-tailed or two-tailed STEP 4 Determine the decision rule for rejecting the null hypothesis. (Reject H0 if t > ) STEP 5 Make the decision to reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis The director of research and development is testing a new medicine. She wants to know if there is evidence at the 0.1...
Your research supervisor wants you to test the null hypothesis H0: μ = 25 against the one-sided alternative hypothesis Ha: μ < 25. The population has a normal distribution with a variance of 16. You are told to use a sample size of 100 and a rejection region of . State the probability of a Type II error for this test of significance to four digits to the right of the decimal point under the alternative hypothesis that μ = 24.
Given the four (a-d) research situations below, a.) State the null hypotheses. and B.) determine the appropriate statistical method you would apply to the problem to determine whether the result is statistically significant. a) A researcher interested in the relationship between the percentage of single men and rape rate collected the data regarding rapes per 100,000 and the percentage of single men in the population for eight cities over 1-year period. b) A researcher conducted an experiment to examine how...
Step 1 of 5:State the null and alternative hypotheses for the test. Step 2 of 5: Find the value of the standard deviation of the paired differences. Round your answer to two decimal places. Step 3 of 5:Compute the value of the test statistic. Round your answer to three decimal places. Step 4 of 5: Find the p-value for the hypothesis test. Round your answer to four decimal places. Step 5 of 5: Draw a conclusion for the hypothesis test....
I need help on question #4 Q1. Although there is a popular belief that herbal remedies such as Ginkgo biloba and Ginseng may improve learning and memory in healthy adults, these effects are usually not supported by well-controlled research. In a typical study, a researcher obtains a sample of n 36 participants and has each person take the herbal supplements every day for 90 days. At the end of the 90 days, each person takes a standardized memory test. This...
Previous research states, "no evidence currently exists supporting or refuting the use of electric fans during heat waves" in terms of mortality and illness. Counterintuitively, Public Health guidelines suggest not using fans during hot weather, with some research reporting the potential of fans accelerating body heating. You decide to research further this seemingly contradictory guidance, hypothesizing that the true population average core body temperature amidst higher ambient temperature and humidity levels while using an electric fan is greater than 111.8...
1. We reject the null hypothesis only when: a. our sample mean is larger than the population mean. b. the p value associated with our test statistic is greater than the significance level of the test we have chosen. c. our sample mean is smaller than the population mean. d. the p value associated with our test statistic is smaller than the significance level of the test we have chosen. 2. In a study of simulated juror decision making, researchers...
ONLY DO NUMBER 3 For this project you will test claims and conjectures using hypothesis testing. For each hypothesis test, report the following: The null hypothesis, H0 The alternative hypothesis, H1 The test statistic rounded to the nearest hundredth (use T Stats or Proportion Stats in StatCrunch to find test statistics) The P-value for the test (use T Stats or Proportion Stats in StatCrunch to find P-values) The formal decision (Reject H0 or Fail to reject H0, remember that reject...
