In redox reactions, there is transfer of electrons from one substance to another and not that of protons. The substance which is reduced gains an electron and the substance which is oxidized loses an electron.

Glycolysis is the process which is common to aerobes and anaerobes. It occurs without oxygen as well as with oxygen. In aerobic condition, glycolysis is proceded by citric acid cycle and in anaerobic condition it is proceded by fermentation, either lactic acid fermentation or alcoholic fermentation.

6 carbon glucose when partially oxidized by glycolysis give rise to three carbon pyruvic acid. This pyruvic acid by further oxidation (linking reaction) give rise to 2 carbon acetyl coenzyme A which then enters tricarboxylic acid cycle.

During chemiosmosis, ATP synthase pumps electron from inner mitochondrial membrane to intermembrane space of mitochondria. Due to this a proton gradient is established which then drives the ATP synthesis.
