Three independent researchers wanted to study the effect of type of diet on weight gain in mice. Each researcher was interested in 3 specific diets: standard mouse chow diet, “junk” food diet, and an organic diet. Each researcher conducted their own study, but they all followed similar procedures. For studies A, B, and C, a total of 66 mice were randomly assigned to receive one of the 3 types of diets (22 in each group). The outcome variable, weight gain (in grams), was assessed after 1 month.

a) Factor (independent variable) in this study is the type of diet which takes one of the 3 different values.

b) Dependent variable is the Weight Gain after 1 month of the experiment.

c) Though the dependent variable is continuous, which is required for independent t-test, there are 3 factors in this study which the independent t-test is not meant to compare. It can compare only 2 groups.
