Douglass’s Narrative of the Life
Discuss how the fight with Edward Covey is important in Douglass’s life and then also choose another important event in Douglass’s life that contributes to his desire for freedom.
There are many events in Douglass’ life that helped him to realize his desire for freedom but they didn’t fuel Douglass’ desire for freedom the way that his fight with Douglass did. The fight resulted into the transformation of Douglass from an under-confident slave worker into a brave and freedom seeking man. Douglass identifies himself as opposite to Edward Covey. He emerges as a brave, humble, and an efficient leader as opposed to Covey who is exposed as arrogant, coward, and inefficient master.
Another event that fuels Douglass’ desire for freedom was his love for reading. He read some important books like ‘The Columbian Orator’ that kept his realization of freedom intact. Reading such works played an important role in adding consistency to his desire.
Another event that contributed to the Douglass’ desire for
freedom was Douglass’ epiphany wherein he experienced religious
breakthrough. This realization made his desire for freedom more
concrete.
These three events helped him in realizing freedom that would help
him escape the bonds of slavery.
