Cladocerans the small phytoplantons. They are herbivores filter feeders that sieve phytoplanton from the water using setae on the pereiopods. They are mostly 0.2–6.0 mm (0.01–0.24 in) long, with the exception of Leptodora, which can be up to 18 mm (0.71 in) long. The body is not obviously segmented and bears a folded carapace which covers the thorax and abdomen. Most cladoceran species live in fresh water and other inland water bodies, with only eight species being truly oceanic.

Cladocerans are  feeds on various sorts of organic detritus including protists and bacteria beating of legs produces a constant current through the carapace which bring such material into the digestive tract. They moves by beating its antennae which are moved by large muscles. They swims in jerky, hopping motion like a flea.
