Calcium sulfate is only sparingly soluble.

CaSO4(s) ⇌ Ca2+(aq) + SO42-(aq)

For this type of dissolution reaction the equilibrium constant, also known as the solubility product, is denoted Ks. In the reaction above, Ks = 8.8 x 10-6. When an excess of the solid is dissolved in water what is the maximum concentration of Ca2+(aq) in mol L-1?

(Give your answer to at least TWO significant figures and do not include the units in the answer box. Hint: to help answer this question, first work out the mathematical equation for Ks in terms of the concentrations of the chemical species.)

Experiment 8 Double Replacement Reactions Background: Some reactions have the net effect of causing the cation of each reactant to trade places, forming a compound with the other anion. These reactions are known as double replacement reactions. In the example below (unbalanced equation), the barium and sodium cations switch places so that barium forms a product with sulfate while sodium forms a product with chloride. Note that the formula of each product is determined by the charges of the ions,...

These are signs of “hard water.” Soap does not lather well in hard water because metal ions, such as Ca2+, form precipitates, creating “soap scum.” A precipitate is an insoluble compound that forms when soluble ions in...
