Bluetooth - A technology that has driven the limits of wireless communication worldwide.

The advantages it has provided in phones, tablets ,Pc, Audio, Entertainment, Automotive (cars), etc is remarkable.

From smartphones to smart homes and buildings with automation, this technology is expanding its presence.

its used to exchange data over devices within a short distance.It uses short wave length UHF radio waves from 2.400 to 2.485 Ghz.

Bluetooth, was initiated in 1989 by Nils Rydbeck, CTO at Ericsson Mobile in Lund, Sweden. to develop wireless headsets. It was "short-link" radio technology, later named as Bluetooth.

The first commercial bluetooth device was launched in 1999. It was a hands-free mobile headset which was awarded with "Best of show Technology Award" at COMDEX. The first Commercial Bluetooth mobile phone was the Ericsson T39 and the first bluetooth integrated laptop was IBM ThinkPad A30 , both of which made it to store shelves in 2001.

The name Bluetooth is an Anglicised version of the Scandinavian Blåtand/Blåtann (Old Norse blátǫnn), the epithet of the tenth-century king Harald Bluetooth who united dissonant Danish tribes into a single kingdom. The implication is that Bluetooth unites communication protocols.

Bluetooth divides transmitted data into packets, and transmits each packet using a radio technology called frequency-hopping spread spectrum.

The Bluetooth Architecture consists of the following

  • Software - It consists of high level protocols such as SDP( to detect devices within the range ) , RFCOMM ( to emulate serial port connections) , TCS( to interact with baseband controller) and L2CAP( for segmentation and reassembly of packets)
  • Hardware - It consists of 2 parts - 1) Radio device used for modulating and transmitting the signal and 2)  Digital Controller which acts as a CPU  responsible for attending the instructions related to Bluetooth of the host device.

Topology

Bluetooth has developed various Topology options for connecting devices in multiple ways like Point to Point(1:1 device communictaion), Broadcast (1:Many device communication) and Mesh Networking(Many:Many device communication).
