In 1905, scientist Lucien Cuénot carried out multiple crosses with yellow and non- yellow colored mice, discovering that the yellow allele is dominant to all non-yellow colors, and that mice that are homozygous for yellow always die during embryonic development. In his laboratory population of mice, Cuénot started out with 72% non-yellow mice and 28% yellow mice. Calculate the allele frequencies for this color locus.

Answer #1

It is given that the yellow allele (Y) is dominant and non-yellow (y) is recessive. It is also given that the mice having YY (homozygous yellow) die during embryonic development.

According to Hardy-Weinberg equation,

p + q = 1

and, p2 + q2 + 2pq = 1

where p and q are the frequencies of the two alleles.

q2 = 0.72 (because it is given that 72% are non-yellow)

q = 0.848

p = 1-q = 1- 0.848 = 0.152

Thus, frequency of allele Y = 0.152

frequency of allele y = 0.848

    RED EXTRA CREDIT EXERCISE: INTERACTION BETWEEN EVOLUTIONARY FORCES A species of mice inhabits a coastal plain of white sand (See Fig. 1). The most common fur color ispale gray, making up 85% of the population. The dominant allele for coat color is black, with the recessive allele coding for the pale gray phenotype. The mice mainly feed on seeds from the local Moave grass, but a few (10%) are also able to digest the young growing shoots of the local...

    On the island of Notion, in the Factotum Archipelago, there lives a population of pencil bears. A portion of these bears have silky fur, and as a result, are much better surfers. The texture of the fur is determined by a single autosomal locus with two alleles: S (trait allele) and s (wild type allele). In a recent study, researched collected the values in the following table: Table 1. Counts of Pencil Bear fur style by genotype Phenotype Genotype Silky...

    10. Write a one-page summary of the attached paper? INTRODUCTION Many problems can develop in activated sludge operation that adversely affect effluent quality with origins in the engineering, hydraulic and microbiological components of the process. The real "heart" of the activated sludge system is the development and maintenance of a mixed microbial culture (activated sludge) that treats wastewater and which can be managed. One definition of a wastewater treatment plant operator is a "bug farmer", one who controls the aeration...
