A curved object slides on a horizontal frictionless floor towards the east and a ball is shot west towards this object. If after the collision, the ball is deflected by 90o, then what is the final velocity of the ball? The final velocity of the curved object is 3.14 m/s and its new direction is south east. Both the ball and the curved object have the same mass.

A 0.25kg ball moving toward the east on a frictionless table at 3.0m/s collides elastically with a 0.40kg ball that is at rest. All we know about the balls after the collision is that the 0.40kg ball moves at 30degrees south of east. Set up but do not solve the equations that can be used to find the speeds of both balls and direction of the first ball after the collision.
