A wastewater flow of 0.38m3/ min is highly acidic and requires neutralization prior to secondary treatment. This flow is to be neutralized to a pH of 7.0 using lime. As per laboratory titration results for the wastewater a two – stage control neutralization system will be required with a total commercial grade lime consumption of 2250 mg/L, consisting of 2000 mg/L in the first stage and 250 mg/L in the second stage. Calculate the volumes of the neutralization basins and power of the mixer’s motors at the rate of 40 W/m3 for a detention time of 5 min.

Answer #1

waste water is to be neutralized as to have PH value 7 , so in order to that we need a neutralizing basin.

Volume of neutralising basin will be dependent of detention time and flow rate of waste water.

So lets solve it.

Given that flow of waste water = 0.38 m3/min.

Detention time in the neutralizing basin = 5min

Hence volume of the neutralising basin required = 0.38*5 = 1.9 m3

Hence volume of the neutralising basin required = 0.38*5 = 1.9 m3

Now power requirement is given as 40 W/m3

Hence total power requirement =40*1.9 = 76 Watt.

Total power requirement =40*1.9 = 76 Watt.

    10. Write a one-page summary of the attached paper? INTRODUCTION Many problems can develop in activated sludge operation that adversely affect effluent quality with origins in the engineering, hydraulic and microbiological components of the process. The real "heart" of the activated sludge system is the development and maintenance of a mixed microbial culture (activated sludge) that treats wastewater and which can be managed. One definition of a wastewater treatment plant operator is a "bug farmer", one who controls the aeration...
