Nurse can identify the patients experiencing dehydration on the basis of following laboratory values :-

  • Blood glucose : > 110 mg/dL
  • Blood urea nitrogen : > 21 mg/dL
  • Serum creatinine : > 1.3 mg/dL
  • Albumin : > 50 g/L
  • Hemoglobin : > 17 g/dL (male) and > 15 g/dL (female)
  • Hematocrit : > 52% (male) and > 47% (female)
  • GFR : Decreased
  • Liver enzymes (SGPT, SGOT, LDH) : Increased
  • Pancreatic enzymes (lipase, amylase) : Increased
  • Sodium : 130 - 150 mmol/liter ( Isotonic dehydration), >150 mmol/liter ( Hypertonic dehydration), <130 mmol /liter (Hypotonic dehydration)
  • Urine specific gravity : increased ( isotonic and hypertonic dehydration) and decreased ( hypotonic dehydration)
