Question

A physics book slides off a horizontal table top with a speed of 1.05 m/s ....

A physics book slides off a horizontal table top with a speed of 1.05 m/s . It strikes the floor after a time of 0.370 s . Ignore air resistance.

Part A)Find the height of the table top above the floor.

Part B)Find the horizontal distance from the edge of the table to the point where the book strikes the floor.

Part C)Find the horizontal component of the book's velocity just before the book reaches the floor.

Part D)Find the vertical component of the book's velocity just before the book reaches the floor.

Part E)Find the magnitude of the book's velocity just before the book reaches the floor.

Answer #1

Part A)Find the height of the table top above the floor.

We are going to use the following equation:

In this case we can treat the problem as free fall, consequently:

and

where

  It is gravity

and

Finally

Part B)Find the horizontal distance from the edge of the table to the point where the book strikes the floor.

The horizontal distance before touching the floor is zero. this is because the book only moved vertically (without horizontal component).

x=0

Part C)Find the horizontal component of the book's velocity just before the book reaches the floor.

The horizontal component of the speed of the book just before it reaches the floor is zero. This is because there was no horizontal displacement and consequently there is no speed in the horizontal component.

Part D)Find the vertical component of the book's velocity just before the book reaches the floor.

where

Part E)Find the magnitude of the book's velocity just before the book reaches the floor.
