Using the textbook, Topic Materials, and your own research, write a 100-250 word response to each question below. Cite the sources used for answering each question, and include real-world examples in the answer to each question.

  1. Define a tuple. How and where does a tuple fit into relational database theory? Why is this an important concept to understand?
  2. How does an object-oriented database management system (OODMS) compare to a relational database management system (RDBMS)? What are the key features of an OODBMS, and how can a developer utilize them?
  3. What is the difference between a Relation in an RDBMS and a Class in an OODBMS? Are they interchangeable, If so, explain how.
  4. Contrast an object-relational database management system (ORDBMS) with an RDBMS? Describe the unique features and provide an example of how an OODBMS might be preferable to an RDBMS.
  5. Contrast the attributes and functionality of an OODBMS versus an ORDBMS. Explain why RDBMS platforms are used more frequently in business than either of these object-oriented platforms.
  6. From an entity relationship diagram (ERD) standpoint, would there be a significant difference between using an ORDMBS versus an RDBMS? Explain why or why not, and discuss specific instances in which differences are the deciding factor.

Answer #1

Solution 1: In a database table, the records and columns represent the attributes. Tuple is defined as a single row inside a table. It contains a set of related data. In the relational database model, data is stored in relations that are tables and are represented in the form of tuples that are nothing but rows. It is important to understand this concept since the tuples represent all the information from each field associated with a single record.

Solution 2: RDBMS (Relational Database Management System) is based on the relational model and the data and relationships are represented by a collection of inter-related tables. OODBMS (Object-Oriented Database Management System) is based on the Object-Oriented Programming model. In OODBMS, data is represented in the form of objects, which are used in object-oriented programming. It implements object-oriented concepts such as objects, classes, polymorphism, inheritance, and encapsulation.

Solution 3: OODBMS refers to the Object-Oriented Database Management System. It is a database model in which the data is stored in the form of objects. If you really want to implement a purely object-oriented data management model then ODBMS is the best choice. If the developer wants to implement the database in an Object-Oriented Programming language then, OODBMS is suitable as it allows to store the data as objects directly into the database. It is much swifter than RDBMS.

Solution 4: A table is defined as a relation in an RDBMS which is basically a collection of data and attributes. While a class in an OODBMS is a collection of methods and attributes. They are not interchangeable.

Solution 5: An OODBMS can handle many large and complex amounts of data as compared to an RDBMS. RDBMS is a table-oriented while the OODBMS is object-oriented. The structure of RDBMS is much simpler as compared to the OODBMS ad the former contains the data in a tabular format while the latter is a little complex due to the involvement of different datatypes.

Solution 6: An OODBMS can handle many large and complex amounts of data as compared to an RDBMS. RDBMS is a table-oriented while the OODBMS is object-oriented. RDBMS is most frequently used because it is much simpler to implement as compared to the OODBMS. Another reason for preference to RDBMS is that it supports the SQL (Structured Query Language) which enjoys the presence of a large online community.

Solution 7: Yes, there is a difference while designing the data model for the RDBMS and OODBMS. In the case of RDBMS, the E-R model is used while in the case of OODBMS, the object-oriented model is used. An ER model represents real-life scenarios as entities. The properties of these entities are described as the attributes in the ER diagram and their connections are described in the form of relationships. An Object-oriented data model is also based on using real-life scenarios. But unlike the E-R model, in this model, the scenarios are represented as objects. The objects that possess similar functionalities are grouped together and are linked to different other objects. The former one is a more practical approach as compared to the latter one. The former is easy to implement and understand while the letter is quite complicated and complex to implement and understand. When you want a flexible model use the OODBMS and when you want a simple model then use RDBMS.
