C. elegans embryogenesis is among the best understood examples of asymmetric cell division, and gastrulation occurs after the embryo reaches the 24-cell stage.

Snails (molluscs) provide some of the most impressive examples of mosaic development, in which the blastomeres are specified autonomously, and of cytoplasmic localization, wherein morphogenetic determinants are placed in a specific region of the oocyte. Snails have been demonstrated that the non-diffusible polar lobe cytoplasm is extremely important in normal mollusc development.
