  • Priming-Priming is the implicit memory effect in which exposure to a stimulus influences response to a later stimulus. It is a technique in psychology used to train a person's memory both in positive and negative ways.
  • The main idea for all kinds of priming is the same: one particular event or stimuli subconsciously influences another, because exposure to this event or stimuli eases the activation of associated concepts in the mind.
  • The crux of the issue of priming for marketing is that if a consumer has a predetermined idea relating to a campaign it may influence their reaction towards it. If the ad content is not understood, for whatever reason it will not be given the required attention needed to persuade the individual to purchase or improve the perception of the brand.
  • One area in which marketing confounds the idea of priming is known as the mere-exposure effect, which is often referred to in social psychology as the familiarity principle. If someone is exposed to a stimulus enough times they will naturally develop an affinity towards it albeit with the caveat the over exposure can have an adverse effect.
  • For example,Positive priming focuses on the processing speed and reaction time. Exposure to positivity speeds up the processing speed, and negativity slows it down. Being exposed to certain stimuli makes a particular response to second stimuli more likely to happen. The positive priming is thought to be caused by the act of spreading activation.
  • This means that the very first stimulus activates a particular memory or association before taking action. Because the memory or association has been activated, when the second stimulus is presented, it takes less activation. Smelling bread in the bakery leads to a higher chance of buying it? This is a perfect example of positive priming.
  • Social proof is the concept that people will follow the actions of the masses. The idea is that since so many other people behave in a certain way, it must be the correct behavior.
  • For example,in digital marketing;when you’re shopping in a store, you have the ability to directly compare products and see which is better. There’s less outside influence on your decision. If you’re trying to decide between a shirt from two different brands, you can feel the quality of them and try them on to see which fits better.
  • Before you buy that shirt online, you look at reviews to see what other people think of the fit and quality. Even if you personally like the style of the shirt, other customers’ experience can ultimately sway your opinion since they’re more knowledgable about the product.
  • Some common tactics of establishing social proof are:
  • Positive reviews
  • Customer testimonials
  • Influencer or celebrity endorsements
  • Growing your social media following
  • Number of users or customers
  • Awards and recognition
