Reward power

According to French and Raven, there are five bases of power.

  • Legitimate
  • Reward
  • Expert
  • Referent
  • Coercive

  • Legitimate power comes from the position a manager holds
  • Reward power is the result of the ability of an individual to compensate others financially or non-financially
  • Expert power is based on the knowledge and skills of an individual.
  • Referent power is based on the charisma of an individual.
  • Coercive power is based on the perception that the individual will punish if one would not follow the rules.

  • Liking: This principle states that similarities in interests lead to an influence on the follower.
  • Authority: This is the influence power related to the expertise in some area.
  • Scarcity: The influencing principle that focuses on limited period offer to persuade the followers.
