Electric Flux Question

The figure shows five-point charges that all lie in the same plane. Five Gaussian surfaces-S1, S2, S3, S4, and S5-each enclose part of this plane, and the figure shows the intersection of each surface with the plane.

Rank the surfaces in order of the electric flux through them, from most positive to most negative.

Answer #1

Flux equals Electric field dot product Area, or q/eo. Lets use the latter, because all you need is the charge, but use the TOTAL ENCLOSED charge.

S1 has a total q of 3-10= -7
s2 has a total q of -10 + 3 + 7 = 0
s3 has a total q of 1 +7 = 8
s4 has a total q of 1-8 = -7
s5 has a total q of -8

So, from positive to negative s3>s2>s1=s4>s5
