s = shirt

p = pants

therefore,

1)s + p = 14

s = 14 - p

2) $11.99 s + $24.99 p = $245.86

substitute in s from #1

[$11.99 (14 - p)] + $24.99 p = $245.86

166.60 - 11.99 p + 24.99 p = 245.86

166.6 + 13 p = 245.86

13 p = 79.26

p = 6.09≈ 6 because you can't have 6.1 of a pants

plug back into #1 formula

s + p = 14

s + 6 = 14

s = 8

so you have 6 pants and 8 shirts.
