DiScuSs the shapes, centers and spread of each distribution and refer to your histogram and numerical summaries to support your claims. You should include at least 2 measures of center and spread for each distribution. Be sure to identify potential outliers and give numerical evidence to support why you believe an observation is a potential outlier. Use the results of part b to answer your research question. Does there appear to be an association between your 2 variables?

Answer #1

The above problem presents a set of Tips given to a waiter at a restaurant and the tips have been classified into two sets- Special Orders & Non Special Orders.

Based on the information given to us for a sample, n= 40 and the associated means, median & standard deviation provided to us, we have to predict the outliers category of persons, i.e, the people whose tip value is having an unusual patterns i.e., the standard deviation is more from the mean .

From the observations we can infer that the mean from Non Special orders = $ 167.37 with S.D of $ 2.51 whereas for the Special Orders, mean = $ 108.13 with S.D. of $ 2 which clearly indicates that the profits from the Non special orders are more.

If we compare the median values and range associated with the observations, we will see that max $12 tips are obtained from Non Special orders & the max tips for special orders = $ 8 , thus it can be easily inferred that the profits associated with Non Special orders is more .

The same can be represented as a normal distribution for both Special & Non- Special Orders considering the sample of 40 with the associated means & standard deviation. The measure of spread will tell us that 15 observations of $1.25 in Special orders is lesser than the mean value and is a potential outlier while for the Non Special Orders observations below $ 2.51 are potential outliers.

The total number of observations to be plotted as histogram & we can easily verify from the data points that certain values fall less than the mean value and they are the potential outliers in this classification.

The association which is observed is only as far as the overall mean is considered, where the value comes to be $2 & $ 2.51 for Special & Non- Special Orders are considered. If we consider the range, we can see that it favors more for the Non-Special Orders.
