Question

A study of the association of breast cancer with duration of oral contraceptive (OC) use compared a group of women with breast cancer with a group of women of similar ages who were admitted to the same hospital for non-cancer diseases. From interviewing the subjects it could be determined who had used OC in the past and for how long. The following data were gathered:

Duration of OC use Never used them < 1 year 1-4 years >4 years breast cancer patients 235 27 43 46 hospital controls 273 26 2

Calculate the appropriate measure of association for this case control study and the 95% CI for each level of OC duration, using never users as the common reference group.

8. For< 1 year: Results of appropriate measure of association 9. For 1-4 years: Results of appropriate measure of association

Please show all calculations.

Duration of OC use Never used them 4 years breast cancer patients 235 27 43 46 hospital controls 273 26 29 23
8. For 4 years: Results of appropriate measure of association 11. If you disregard the duration of OC use, and lump together all the OC users, what would your results be? 95% CI 95% CI 95%

BACKGROUND & METHODS The relationship between stress and breast cancer has been examined in many epidemiological studies, the results of which have yielded mixed results. One reason for these differences is the use of different measures of stress. For example, death of a spouse or close relative is a major acute stressor, whereas stress experienced in daily life is more moderate and chronic in nature. As these different types of stress likely have different physiological and psychological impacts, the observed...
