Add 2 mL of water. Heat the solution briefly to boiling. The solution should be clear and colorless. Transfer the clear, warm solution to a centrifuge tube using a filter pipet and allow to cool to room temperature. Add 4 mL of methylene chloride. Swirl and shake to mix the layers. Transfer the lower (organic) layer to an Erlenmeyer flask. Add anhydrous Na2SO, until no more clumping of the solid is observed. After letting stand for 10 min- utes, transfer the solution using a Pasteur filter pipet to a clean, tared Erlenmeyer flask containing a boiling chip. Evaporate the solvent in the hood leaving an oily residue. Weigh the product. Record the IR spectrum and the NMR spectrum and deduce the structure of the product(s). If more than one product is formed, use NMR spectroscopy or GC to determine the product composition.
