Part B: Miniscale Hydrolysis of Methyl Salicylate To a 25-mL round-bottom flask containing a spin bar, add 7.5 mL of 5 M NaOH and 1.0mL. of methyl salicylate. Swirl to mix. A white solid will form, which will eventually disap- pear as the reaction is heated. Fit the flask with a water-jacketed reflux condenser. Place a thermometer in the sand bath or heat block and heat to approximately 120°C. Turn the water on gently to the reflux condenser and lower the flask into the heated sand bath or block. Reflux the solution with stirring for 15 minutes. Then remove the flask from the heat source and cool to room temperature. Transfer the solution to a 50-mL Erlenmeyer flask and carefully add 10-15 mL of 3 M sulfuric acid in small aliquots while swirling. A white precipitate will form. Check the pH to make sure that it is strongly acidic (pH -2-3). Cool the mixture in ice and then suction filter. Wash the crystals with small amounts of cold water. The crude product can be recrystallized from water. Filter the crystals using suction hltration. Wash the crystals with cold water. Let the crystals air dry before weighing and taking a melting point.
