Question 10 (Use Data Set 15) a. Refer to Data Set 15- Flight Data, and use the departure delay times and the arrival delay times to construct a scatterplot, find the value of the linear correlation coefficient r, and find either the P-value or the critical values of r using α-005. Determine whether there is sufficient evidence to support the claim of a linear correlation between the two variables. b. Use the departure delay times and the arrival delay times to find the regression equation, letting the first variable be the predictor (x) variable. Find the best predicted arrival delay time for a flight with no departure delay. Use the prediction procedure summarized in Figure 10-5 of the e-text (p. 507). Data Set 15: Flight Data All flights are American Airlines flights from New York (JFK) to Los Angeles (LAX),and all fights occurred in January of a recent year. ID is the identification number on the tail of the aircraft. Dep Delay is the departure delay time (minutes), and negative numbers correspond to flights that departed early. Taxi Out is the time (minutes) that the flight used to taxi from the terminal to the runway for departure. Taxi In is the time (minutes) that the flight used to taxi to the terminal after landing. Arr Delay is the arrival delay time (minutes), and negative numbers correspond to flights that arrived early (before the scheduled arrival time). Data are from the Bureau of Transportation.

Answer #1

Here we are supposed to find best predicted arrival delay time for a flight with no departure delay.

In order to find this, we need to filter out the flights with no departure delay. The below table gives list of all such flights.

Flight ID Dep Delay Taxi Out Taxi in Arr delay
1 N320AA 0 22 11 -15
3 N338AA 0 27 11 0
19 N329AA 0 13 4 -30

Observe that arrival delay is continuous variable and best predicted value in this case is arithmetic mean.

The mean is calculated as:

\bar{x}=\frac{\sum x}{n}= \frac{-15+0-30}{3}= -15

Hence best predicted arrival delay time for a flight with no departure delay is 15 min.
