Using data on participants in this cohort study, a group of researchers set out to examine whether smoking was associated with colon cancer among obese women. They therefore selected 100 obese patients with colon cancer and 300 obese patients without colon cancer as controls. Of the 100 participants with colon cancer, 20 reported smoking while 30 of the 300 participants without colon cancer smoked.
