Medication checkout process:

A researcher/clinician/staff member enters the “Medication Supply” room. If that person is denied access, then the process is terminated (i.e., no medication can be checked out). If granted access, then the person uses his/her keycard to access the cabinet containing the requisite medication(s). If that person does not have access to the cabinet, an IT/security alert is triggered and the process is terminated. If the person has access, then (s)he collects and scans the medication and his/her keycard. If that person is not granted access to the medication, then IT/security is alerted and the process is terminated. If allowed, the person enters either the number of units being removed (e.g., pills or shots) or the current units of a bulk checkout (e.g., removing a vial of liquid to draw shots from later) – if the latter, then the medication is marked as “out,” meaning it must be returned. Repeat the collection process if more medications are to be withdrawn from the cabinet. If there are no more medications to be checked out from the cabinet, the person shuts and locks it. If medications in other cabinets need to be checked out, then the process repeats. When finished, the person exits the “Medication Supply” room, ensuring the door is locked; locking it if necessary. This ends the medication checkout process.
