Selected topic: Sleep

Chapter: 8

Explain why you selected this topic:

It is a very interesting topic that has a direct correlation to the psychology of an individual. It is underplayed and humans consciously avoid it when necessary and later struggle when they have the time but no ability to sleep.

What makes it interesting?

It is interesting because it is a need, a basic necessity that every human need but more often than not is neglected until there is an underlying cause which is identified much later. It impacts our functioning directly and affects moods adversely.

How does it apply to everyday life?

As humans, we need to sleep every day. And our sleep patterns need to have proper rhythm and stages each of which has its own function. A disturbance or skip in any or all f these are indicative of underlying physical, emotional, or psychological issues. Right from breathing right to respond to stimulus and periods of sleep, it is something that is every person's basic necessity.

Is it something that has relevance to the field of psychology and/or treatment of individuals with mental health issues?

Yes, it has utmost relevance and anything that goes amiss with sleep has been associated with a host of psychological concepts and mental health issues. Some of the examples - Narcolepsy, Insomnia, Sleep Apnea, Jet Lag, etc.,
