Why do Boolean functions play a central role in hardware architectures?

All the logic performed in hardware is of true and false form, that is all the decision making is made in terms of boolean values. Boolean functions determine what function is being performed to give the particular result, everything is designed in terms of Boolean functions. hence it has a key role to play. Also optimization is important to use minimal gates.

Describe Composite Gates.

any gate formed using the basic gates is called composite gate. Basic gates are AND, OR and NOT. Any function or gate can be designed using these three. the new gate designed using these is called composite gate(having more than 1 basic gate)

Describe Multiplexors and Demultiplexors. What is the importance of the use of the selection bit and the data bits?

multiplexors - is used to send a particular input to the output based on the values of select lines. a multiplexer always has n select lines, 2n lines of input and 1 output. based on the value of select lines which input will be passed to output is decided.

demultiplexors are used to generate different outputs from single input based on the select line. this performs exact opposite operation of mux. It has 1 input,  n select lines, 2n lines of output.

Selection bits determine which value will be chosen in mux or demux. Data bits are the inputs to the mux.

Example of mux and demux

23 12 S, 3 9四 So 5

mux is represented as 2n : 1

demux is represented as 1: 2n
