Answer #1

9)

a) We want to test Ho: μ = 0, Ha: μ ≠ 0 where μ = mean weight loss

b)

SRS – The subjects were probably not a random sample, hopefully they are representative of a larger population

Normality – sample size is large enough to assume normality (n>30)

Independent – The population is easily greater than 10 * 47

c) Since test statistics value is t = 4.68 for df = 46 so p-value of the test is 0.00026. P-value is less than 0.05 and also from 0.10. So we reject the null hypotheses at 0.05 and 0.10 level of significance. That is result is significant at 0.05 and 0.10 levels of significance.

d)

Result t(46)=4.68, p < 0.01 shows that p value is less than 0.01, so we reject the null hypothesis at 0.01 level of significance.

According to test, the result are significant. That is weight loss program is effective.

A particular paper described a study of children who were underweight or normal weight at age 2. Children in the sample were classified according to the number of sweet drinks consumed per day and whether or not the child was overweight one year after the study began. Is there evidence of an association between whether or not children are overweight after one year and the number of sweet drinks consumed? Assume that it is reasonable to regard the sample of...

In a study about dieting and weight loss, N=80 subjects were gathered to participate. All of the participants were approximately 20-25% overweight (from their ideal weight), with no habits of exercising. The researchers randomly assigned these participants into four different categories: participants in Category I (N=20) ate the traditional low-caloric diet, participants in Category II (N=20) ate the ketogenic diet, participants in Category III (N=20) were told to eat whatever they want as if they were not on a diet...

Among 36 obese individuals aged 55 to 75 years randomly selected into the study, each individual had his/her BMI computed before and after the program. The decrease in the BMI was recorded into a SAS dataset and proc univariate was used to analyze this dataset. The population m ean of the decrease in the BMI is denoted by μ. In a study of 380 diabetics and nondiabetics, patients were classified as underweight, normal weight, overweight and obese according to their diabetes status. The probability of being normal weight is 0.31 and the probability of having diabetes is 0.39. If you select two individuals from the population, the probability of being diabetic and normal weight is 0.09. What is the probability that either of the two randomly selected individuals (or both) will be diabetic or normal weight? a. Pr (diabetic...
