Answer #1

Johari Window is a technique which describes qualities and nature of a person in four quadrants as below. It is widely used to improve self-awareness within an person and helps them understand the relationship between themselves and the world.

Known to self Not known to self
Known to others Arena " Open self" Blindspot "Blind Self"
Not known to others Facade "Hidden Self" Unknown self

First quadrant of the Johari Window is the Open Arena which displays the qualities or personality of Rachel which is known to her as well as others. She knows and everyone sees Rachel is a pretty blonde girl, daughter of a rich doctor, popular in school with an amazing fashion sense

Coming to the Facade quadrant, the hidden self of Rachel can be seen as a girl who has the guts to run out of her wedding because she wanted to do something in her life by herself rather than being Mrs. Orthodentist.
Rachel is seen to be a confident, pretty, stuck up girl but deep down she has her own problems. She is insecure about the future esp when she becomes a single mother.

Blind self of Rachel is the areas of her personality which she is not aware of but the world can see it. For eg. she is careless who keeps losing things even if borrowed from her friends and messes up with the dessert recipe she tries. She is selfish and belives in exchanging the gifts she gets. She does not value the emotions of the giver and rather terms it as being practical. She is not aware of the fact that she is careless and selfish and does not think much about the feelings of the other person

Unknown self is the personality which is not known to Rachel as well as the world. For eg. when Rachel gets to know her friend Phoebe doesnt wear clothes when she is alone in her apartment, she is a bit surprized but when she does it herself she feels liberated and relaxed which she was not aware about herself.
It is difficuilt to make a connection for the unknown panel until it surfaces out and by the time is does, it falls into another panel of the Johari window.

1. The obvious characteristics of Rachel in the hidden, blind and unknown areas were that she was a careless girl who was obsessed with herself so much that she tend to lose interest in the other person's feelings. She is insecure about her future both personal and professional esp when she saw someone growing at a faster rate than her.
If the open arena was bigger, she would have been more forgiving, not secure about herself and be more considerate towards others. The course of events would have definitely changed as follows:
a. she would not have left Barry at the altar, instead should have discussed her problems and concerns long time back
b. she would have forgiven Ross for cheating on her and would have a lot more patience when Ross was being an obsessive boyfriend

2. Rachel was told about her BLind Arena lots of times by her friends. Rachel's close friend Monica told her that she was a careless girl and forbade her to use any of her things because she always ended up losing them. When Ross was upset when he got to know Rachel exchanged the gifts he gave her, he also told her that she should be more considerate about other person's feelings and not just be practical all the time.
