Let x be the total number of blanks are required

After operation 1, 5% are scrapped so we are left with

(1-0.05)x = 0.95x

After operation 2, 4.5% are scrapped so we are left with

0.95*(1-0.045)x = 0.90725 x

After operation 3, 3% are scrapped so we are left with

0.90725*(1-0.03)x = 0.88x

After operation 4, 2.5% are scrapped so we are left with

0.88*(1-0.025)x = 0.858x

We need a total of 20,000 units

therefore, 0.858 x = 20,000

x = 23310

Hence, a total of 23,310 blanks are required
